What's Organic Cotton?

No, we don’t eat organic cotton, and we don’t suggest you do, either. The point is this: conventional cotton farming is one of the most environmentally unfriendly crops worldwide. This is bad. Fortunately, sustainable agriculture is the answer. This is good.

Conventional cotton growing uses up to 25% of the world’s pesticides, putting about one third of a pound in every t-shirt you own. Sustainable agriculture means the farmer doesn’t use harmful pesticides and chemical fertilizers. The general idea is to grow and harvest and process crops without damaging the ecosystem.

The spirit of social consciousness that underlies the Fair Trade initiative is another aspect of sustainable agriculture. Shouldn’t the farmers and field laborers and factory workers who are participants in the supply chain from earth to market earn enough from their efforts to rise above subsistence living? Of course! That’s why we support Fair Labor organizations.

There’s a whole lot more to the subject, of course, but that’s it in an organic nutshell.

When you buy organic, you’re doing something good for yourself, the global community, and the planet. When you buy Fierce Hugs gifts, you buy quality organic products. That’s really, really good.
